Portrait of Dymon Jimenez in a black shirt with tattooed arms crossed, in front of a black-and-yellow graffiti wall Dymon Jimenez · Artist / maker

Origin · 01

He traded a skateboard
for a tattoo machine.

That exchange changed the direction of his life. In his own words: “My beginnings in this beautiful art were the result of a trade I made with an acquaintance. I gave him my skateboard, and he gave me his tattoo machine in return. I traded skating for tattooing.”

There were no tutorials waiting for him. “That was the start of everything, and I learned the craft empirically because, back when I began, we didn't have the resources and knowledge available today.” Drawing, tattooing, observing, and doing it again: an education measured in skin, not certificates.

“Don't copy. Create. The best tattoo is the one that means something to you.”
